* Only Nifty 50 (NSE) & Sensex (BSE) have weekly benchmark contracts; others trade monthly/quarterly cycles. ** Sensex revised 10 → 20 in 2025; unchanged in Jan 2026 revision. Sources: NSE circular 28-Nov-2025, SEBI expiry framework.

  • 📅 2026 Expiry Calendar: NSE derivatives expire Tuesday, BSE Sensex Thursday — SEBI’s one-weekly-expiry-per-exchange rule (since Sept 2025).
  • 📉 Lower capital per lot: Nifty 65 (was 75) cuts per-lot margin & risk ~13% — recalculate position size with the new lots.
  • 💰 Why revised? SEBI keeps index contract values near the ~₹15 lakh band — lots shrink as index levels rise.
  • 🔄 Rollover alert: all contracts expiring after 30 Dec 2025 use new lots — never mix old & new quantities when rolling over.

📚 Trading Risk Management Guide (India)

1. Position Sizing — The #1 Skill

Position sizing decides how much you buy so that a stop loss hit costs exactly your planned risk (e.g. 1% of capital). Formula:

  • Quantity = (Capital × Risk%) ÷ |Entry − Stop Loss|
  • Wide stop → smaller quantity. Tight stop → larger quantity.
  • Never round UP quantity — always round down.
  • For intraday, also respect leverage / margin rules of your broker.

2. Risk Management Rules That Work

  • Risk 0.5–1% per trade as a beginner; max 2% as experienced.
  • Use a daily stop (2–3%): stop trading if hit.
  • Risk only what keeps you calm — emotion is a position-size problem.
  • Avoid correlated bets: 3 Nifty-linked trades = one big trade.
  • Journal every trade: entry, stop, target, emotion, outcome.

3. Capital Preservation & Drawdown Math

A 10% loss needs 11.1% to recover; a 50% loss needs 100%. Preservation beats prediction.

  • Monthly loss > 8–10% → halve position size next month.
  • Two red weeks in a row → trade minimum quantity only.
  • Keep 6-month emergency fund separate from trading capital.
  • Withdraw a fixed % of quarterly profits to lock gains.

4. Risk Reward Ratio — Your Edge Multiplier

  • Minimum acceptable: 1:1.5. Ideal: 1:2 or 1:3.
  • At 1:2, you profit even with only 40% winning trades.
  • Measure from entry to stop (risk) and entry to realistic target (reward).
  • Trailing stops lock profit; don't move stops away from entry — ever.

5. Intraday vs Swing Risk Practices

  • Intraday: fixed daily loss limit, no overnight gap risk, smaller stops, strict 9:15–3:20 discipline.
  • Swing: smaller position size for wider stops, hedge event risk, respect support/resistance + volatility (ATR).
  • Options buying: define max premium loss upfront; theta decay punishes holding.
  • Futures: check lot margins + MTM; one lot of Nifty moves ₹65 per point (2026 lot size).

6. Professional Pre-Trade Checklist

  1. Capital risk % decided? (≤1–2%)
  2. Entry, stop loss and target marked on chart?
  3. Risk reward ≥ 1:1.5?
  4. Position quantity from calculator (not gut feel)?
  5. Daily loss limit not yet hit?
  6. News / event risk checked (RBI, results, expiry)?

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about risk management calculators and trading calculators in India.

A position size calculator tells you exactly how many shares or lots to trade based on your capital, risk % per trade, entry and stop loss — so a losing trade costs only your planned amount.
Most professionals demand at least 1:1.5, ideally 1:2 or higher. At 1:2 you stay profitable even if only 4 out of 10 trades win.
The standard rule is 0.5%–2% of trading capital per trade. Beginners should start at 0.5%–1% for intraday and swing trading.
Maximum risk for an option buyer = Premium × Lot Size × Number of Lots. Brokerage, STT and GST are extra. Option sellers face theoretically unlimited risk and need margin.
From the January 2026 F&O series: Nifty 50 = 65 (was 75), Bank Nifty = 30 (was 35), Fin Nifty = 60, Midcap Nifty = 120, Nifty Next 50 = 25, Sensex = 20. NSE expires Tuesday, BSE Sensex Thursday. Use the one-click presets in the calculators above.
Set a maximum daily loss (commonly 2–3% of capital). If hit, close the terminal for the day. This single rule prevents most account blow-ups.
Yes — 100% free, no sign-up. Your data stays in your browser (local save) and is never sent to any server.
Swing trading needs more capital per trade because stops are wider, so position size is smaller. Intraday uses tighter stops but demands stricter daily loss discipline.
