Technical Analysis for 5 Oct 2026: Nifty, Bank Nifty & Sensex

Nifty and Sensex remain technically vulnerable after Thursday’s decline, while Bank Nifty needs fresh price confirmation because verified index-specific levels are unavailable.

By Pranjal Kalita Published: Updated:

Primary takeaway: With the market closed on 5 October for Gandhi Jayanti, the next tradable setup depends on whether Nifty protects its 200-week exponential moving average near 22,378 and whether Sensex can regain the 72,500 resistance area.

Nifty closed at 22,421.95 on 1 October after falling below intraday support areas and approaching its 200-week exponential moving average. The index has also recorded nine consecutive red weekly candles, leaving the broader structure weak even though an oversold rebound remains possible.

Sensex ended at 71,909 after touching 71,292 during its expiry session. Its late recovery reduced part of the intraday damage, but it did not reclaim the 72,500 area that had acted as resistance.

No verified Bank Nifty closing value, option-chain reading or index-specific support and resistance level is available for this analysis. Any Bank Nifty view must therefore remain conditional on fresh chart confirmation rather than an unsupported numerical forecast.

Key takeaways

  • The NSE and BSE cash markets are closed on 5 October 2026 for Gandhi Jayanti, so these levels apply to the next trading session rather than to a Monday session.
  • Nifty’s immediate technical test is the zone around its 200-week EMA at 22,378.
  • The earlier 22,595 support area has turned into resistance after the index failed to sustain above it.
  • Sensex needs to regain 72,500 to weaken the near-term bearish structure.
  • Bank Nifty should be judged through price structure and participation after reopening; no numerical level is assigned without verified data.

Nifty Prediction: long-term support faces a test

Nifty opened below the prior reference level of 22,595 and could not establish acceptance above it. Although the index briefly reached 22,610, the lack of sustained five-minute closes above 22,595 kept that area functioning as resistance.

The index later lost 22,553 and moved below the round-number area of 22,500. Selling accelerated after midday, and the session reached a low of 22,227 before short covering helped Nifty settle at 22,421.95.

The weekly chart carries the more important message. Nifty has formed nine consecutive red weekly candles and closed close to the 200-week EMA, identified at approximately 22,378. A long-term moving average can attract demand, but merely touching it does not prove that a bottom has formed.

What the nine-week decline means

A long sequence of red weekly candles indicates persistent selling pressure. It can also leave the index stretched enough for a counter-trend rebound, creating a situation where bearish momentum and rebound risk coexist.

A historical episode in 2001 also produced nine consecutive negative weeks, followed by a green weekly candle that closed above the preceding week’s high. That comparison is useful as context, not as a forecast. Market structure, index composition, liquidity and economic conditions differ, so the old pattern cannot be treated as a promise of repetition.

Conditional Nifty scenarios

Bullish scenario

Holding above 22,378 and subsequently reclaiming 22,595 would indicate that buyers are defending the long-term average. Failure to hold 22,378 would invalidate the initial support-based rebound case.

Bearish scenario

A sustained break below 22,378 would keep the weekly decline active and bring the 22,227 session low back into focus. A recovery above 22,595 would weaken this bearish continuation setup.

Neutral scenario

Repeated movement between 22,378 and 22,595 would signal consolidation. Traders would then need to wait for a sustained exit from this range rather than anticipate direction inside it.

Sensex Prediction: 72,500 remains the recovery hurdle

Sensex faced resistance around 72,500 despite recording an intraday high of 72,572. It initially attempted to hold near the previous reference area of 72,336, but the structure weakened after midday.

The decline carried the index below 72,200 and 72,000, eventually producing a low of 71,292. A recovery emerged later in the session and lifted the closing value to 71,909, but the index still finished beneath the key resistance band.

Conditional Sensex scenarios

  • Bullish: A sustained recovery above 72,500 would show that buyers have absorbed the earlier supply. A return below 72,336 after the breakout would reduce the reliability of that signal.
  • Bearish: Failure below 72,500 followed by a break of 71,292 would confirm continued weakness. A sustained move above 72,500 would invalidate this immediate bearish structure.
  • Neutral: Price remaining between 71,292 and 72,500 would represent a broad consolidation range. Confirmation should come from a close outside the range, not only an intraday spike.

Bank Nifty Prediction: wait for verified price confirmation

Bank Nifty cannot be assigned a responsible numerical prediction from the available information. The supporting material does not provide a verified close, day high, day low, option-chain structure, PCR, max pain or open-interest distribution for the banking index.

The practical approach is to mark the first session’s opening range after the holiday and compare Bank Nifty’s behaviour with heavyweight private banks. A stronger setup would require the index to sustain above its opening range while market breadth improves. A weaker setup would involve rejection near the opening-range high followed by a break of the opening-range low.

Either reading should be invalidated when price moves back through the opposite side of the confirmed range. This method avoids inventing support or resistance figures before the market supplies them.

Market participation behind the decline

The session was not uniformly weak. HDFC Bank and major information-technology shares including Infosys, TCS and HCL Tech showed relative strength, but that support was insufficient to offset weakness elsewhere.

ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro and Bajaj Auto were among the names observed under pressure. This divergence matters because an index rebound supported by only a few large constituents can remain fragile.

For the next session, price should be read alongside breadth. A more credible recovery would normally involve broader participation across banks, autos and index heavyweights rather than dependence on isolated strength.

What traders should watch after the holiday

  1. Nifty versus 22,378: Observe whether the 200-week EMA attracts sustained demand or gives way on a closing basis.
  2. Nifty versus 22,595: A reclaim would be more meaningful than a brief intraday move above the level.
  3. Sensex versus 72,500: This remains the main resistance test for a recovery attempt.
  4. Sensex versus 71,292: A break would extend the weak structure; holding it would preserve the possibility of consolidation.
  5. Bank Nifty confirmation: Use the post-holiday opening range and heavyweight-bank participation instead of relying on unverified levels.

Risk and practical interpretation

The long weekend increases the risk of an opening gap when trading resumes. Overnight global moves can cause the indices to open beyond nearby technical levels, so a pre-decided view may become obsolete before an order is placed.

Options traders also need to account for volatility, time decay, bid-ask spreads, margin requirements and transaction costs such as STT. A correct directional view can still result in a loss when the option premium, implied volatility or timing is unfavourable.

The disciplined response is to wait for price acceptance around the stated levels. A single candle or opening spike is weaker evidence than repeated closes, improving breadth and follow-through.

Technical outlook

The immediate trend remains weak, but Nifty is testing an important long-term moving average and both benchmark indices have already experienced a sharp decline. That combination creates two-sided risk: further breakdown is possible, while short covering can produce a fast rebound.

Nifty needs to defend 22,378 and regain 22,595 to improve its structure. Sensex needs to recover above 72,500, while 71,292 remains the downside reference. Bank Nifty requires fresh, verified chart evidence after the holiday before a numerical scenario can be published responsibly.
